According to Judith Butler, there is the heteronormative matrix, which highlights the
belief that one’s gender imitates their sex, meaning that the first features, or is
defined by, the latter. When the constructed gender comes to be considered
independent from biological limits, then it becomes a free and suspended idea. This
results in the fact that gender specific words, such as “man” and “masculine”, can
easily describe masculinity as much as femininity, and vice versa, “woman” and
“feminine” can refer to femininity as much as to masculinity.
I waited until midnight, so that everyone was asleep. Then, I ran to our closet, where
we used to put only our formal clothes – those that my parents used to wear on
special occasions – and I opened one of the flaps carefully, because it usually
squeaked. I went inside, so darkness was all around me, which I liked then, and I
found one of my mother’s dresses. She would say that it is one of those dresses,
which are especially for New Year’s Eve celebrations. It was short, purple, with
transparent embroidered stones and it was somehow shining. I put it on, while still
wearing my pajamas, and I sang “We wish you a Merry Christmas and a Happy New
Year”.
